Fighting the Landfill Expansion

Commissioner Verdes has led the fight against the landfill in Bethlehem Township. He was the first to advocate and request the Township to seek official party status in the landfill conditional use hearings. He also drafted (with the help of Commissioner John Galagher) and presented the official resolution opposing the landfill expansion that passed unanimously on February 6th, 2023. Commissioner Verdes posted the  following message on social media after the resolution passed.

“Last night the Bethlehem Township Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution opposing the expansion of the Bethlehem Landfill. We also authorized the Township to take legal action in cooperation with the coalition fighting the landfill expansion. The proposed landfill expansion will negatively impact the general quality of life for many residents of Bethlehem Township as a result of an increase in noise pollution, noxious odors, landfill emissions, and the destruction of the scenic landscape view from Bethlehem Township. These adverse impacts may also negatively influence the property values of homeowners living in the southern region of the township and will cause irreparable damage to our local ecosystem. Thank you to our Township officials who took swift action last week on behalf of the board to ensure the Township obtained party status in the conditional use hearings. Thank you to Citizens for Responsible Development for organizing the opposition to the landfill and Thank you to all of the local municipalities, organizations, businesses, and individuals fighting this fight. We are proud to be part of this coalition with you.”
